Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace against Hungary on Tuesday to surpass Michel Platini as the all-time highest goalscorer in the history of the European championships.

Portugal, the defending champions, left it late against Hungary at the Puskas Arena as they scrapped up three goals in the final ten minutes of the game.

Ronaldo entered the game tied with Platini as the competition‘s all-time goalscorer — nine goals each.

The Portuguese forward, however, converted a penalty in the 88th minute and added another in stoppage time to leapfrog the Frenchman as the highest goalscorer at the European championships.

Ronaldo, who has represented Portugal in every European championship since making his debut in 2004, also became the oldest player to score two goals in the tournament at 36 years and 130 days. 

The victory has taken Portugal to the top of group F. 

In the other match of the group which took place at the Allianz Arena, France dominated Germany to win 1-0. 

The French side imposed themselves brilliantly in the game with Paul Pogba feeding the attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema.

The pressure bore fruit in the 20th minute after Mats Hummels bundled home a Luis Hernandez’s cross into his own net.

Mbappe added another goal in the second half but his curling finish was chopped off for offside.

For the second time in the game, VAR foiled another Les Bleus jubilation after a goal by Benzema was cancelled in the 86th minute.
