Cristiano Ronaldo has been punished with a five-game ban for offences committed during Real Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup first leg against Barcelona.

Ronaldo was handed a one-game ban for his red card and suspended for four games for the physical altercation with the center referee.

A €3000 (£2727) fine was also added to the suspension.

A possible appeal will have to wait until Wednesday because of a public holiday on Tuesday.

The second leg of the Super Cup at the Bernabeu will take place on Wednesday.

Ronaldo on Sunday received two bookings in the space of three minutes.

He got the first yellow card for taking off his shirt to celebrate after putting Madrid ahead and the second was given after the referee adjudged him to have dived in the penalty area of Barcelona.
