Eyitayo Jegede, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ondo state 2016 election, has lauded the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO) recently set up by Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Onnoghen had appointed Ayo Salami, a former president of the appeal court, as the chairman of the committee.

Speaking to journalists after a special court session to announce the 2017/2018 legal year in Ondo Jegede described the committee as a “step in the right direction”.

He said the committee would no doubt boost the fight against corruption.

“I believe the intention of the CJN is to ensure that we dispose justice speedily, especially corruption cases and by and large, the idea is monitor who happens to these cases,” Jegede said.

“All of us believe we must fight corruption and I think the CJN’ s move is a step in the right direction.”

Jegede, who was  former attorney general and justice commissioner in the state, also expressed confidence in the committee comprising past NBA presidents and presidents of the court of appeal.

“I believe our goal should be one, fight corruption, and where there are cases of corruption, they should be disposed off quickly, believing that in all these, there is presumption of innocence in favour of the suspects and must go through their trial,” he said.
