Twenty two year-old songwriter and singer, Sam Smith, as well as Pharrell Williams and Beyonce Knolwes won big at the 57th Grammy awards, carting away three awards each. Smith, though, won a total of four awards.

The event, which was hosted by LL Cool J, a host for the event for the fourth consecutive time at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California, was indeed an eventful night for Smith.

Beyonce, Pharrell and Smith were the Grammy favourites as they came in with six nominations each.

Smith won Song of the year and Record of the year (the latter with co-writers James Napier and William Phillips) for Stay with Me as well as Best New Artiste and Best Pop Vocal Album for In The Lonely Hour.

Top grossing act, Beyoncé, won the Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song for her Drunk In Love, and Best Surround Sound Album for Beyoncé.

Pharrell Williams, on the other hand, won the Best Pop Solo performance for Happy, Best Urban Contemporary Album for Girl and Best Music Video for Girl.

Angelique Kidjo, one of the biggest African musicians of all time, won her second Grammy for World Music for Eve, a musical tribute to African women.

“I wanted the world to see African women not only through the lens of rape and misery, but also from the musical point – their beauty, their resilience,” Kidjo told reporters in Los Angeles.

The late Joan Rivers won Best Spoken Word album for Diary of a Mad Diva, and her daughter, Melissa Rivers, was on hand to accept the award.

“If my mother was here tonight, she would not only be honoured and thrilled to be holding her first Grammy, she would most likely have it copied and on the air on QVC by 11,” Melissa said.

As predicted by TheCable, Smith, Beyonce, Pharrell, and Kidjo won at the Grammy.

Others winners include Eminem, Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, Kendrick Lamar and Beck.
