Samson Itodo, executive director of Yiaga Africa, has been appointed to the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Group on Elections (AI AGE), an initiative convened by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

In a statement issued on Friday, IFES described Itodo’s appointment as a significant step towards safeguarding democracy amid the growing influence of artificial intelligence.

His inauguration into the advisory group took place virtually on June 12, bringing together election administrators, AI experts, and democracy advocates from around the world.

The AI AGE aims to develop global principles, frameworks, and tools to guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence in electoral processes.

The group will support election management bodies, policymakers, and technology developers in navigating the opportunities and risks posed by AI, particularly in combating disinformation and enhancing electoral transparency and accountability.

IFES noted that Itodo joins the group at a time when elections globally face increasing threats from disinformation, voter manipulation, and AI-driven interference.

His inclusion, the foundation said, reflects his track record in promoting democratic governance and innovation across Africa.

This new role comes just three months after his appointment to the African Union (AU) Advisory Group on AI in Peace, Security, and Governance.

He was named to the AU panel in March for a four-year term, where he contributes to high-level conversations on AI’s impact on governance across the continent.

Speaking on his new role, Itodo harped on the urgency of ethical frameworks to guide AI adoption in elections.

“Given the exponential growth in the adoption of AI in the electoral process — especially against the backdrop of democratic backsliding — the AI AGE provides strategic thought leadership on guardrails for responsible and ethical use of AI in elections,” he said.

“As a member of AI AGE, I look forward to mobilising a coalition of the willing to produce knowledge and resources that strengthen the use of AI in advancing electoral integrity across Africa.”

Itodo holds a law degree from the University of Jos and a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Oxford.

His research focuses on social movements, election law, and democratic innovation.

He also serves on the boards of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and the Kofi Annan Foundation.
