Samsung Electronics West Africa Limited (SEWA) has announced the postponement of the launch of Samsung Galaxy Note7 in Nigeria.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the shift was due to the delay in sales of the device globally, owing to isolated battery cell problems.
On September 2, Samsung had announced an official Galaxy Note7 replacement programme due to a rare battery cell manufacturing error, which had led to a few reported incidents.
“Since customers’ safety is our top priority, all Galaxy Note7 purchased are eligible for replacement despite the original place of purchase,” the statement read.
Current users of Galaxy Note7 were advised to visit the nearest Samsung authorized service centre for immediate assistance about replacement programme.
The company acknowledged the inconvenience that the postponement may have caused in the market, but added that it would ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products.
“Samsung is completely committed to fixing this problem and ensuring the highest level of safety and satisfaction for its customers,” the statement read.
On Tuesday, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) directed passengers not to turn on or charge the device while aboard any plane.
Sam Adurogboye, NCAA’s general manager, public relations, who gave the directive, said the action was necessary following recent incidents and concerns raised by manufacturers of the product.
Passengers were also warned not to board planes with the phones or even keep them in any checked-in baggage.
