Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has increased scholarships and bursaries for students in tertiary institutions who are indigenes of the state.

Sanwo-Olu, the governor, spoke during a one-day interactive session with student union leaders in Lagos.

The session, held at the Adeyemi Bero Hall in Alausa Ikeja, was organised by the ministry of tertiary education.

The theme of the event was “Students as strategic partners in the governance process: Challenges and prospects for youth development.”

Sanwo-Olu said his administration would pay N225,000 and N60,000 as scholarships and bursaries to indigenous students.

This is an increment from the existing N200,000 and N50,000 previously paid.

He also appointed four former student union leaders as his senior special assistants.

Those appointed are Eniola Opeyemi, Kayode Samuel, Giwa Moore and Adeola Adewunmi.

In a post-event commentary on his X page, the governor wrote that the “scholarships will now be extended to less privileged and physically challenged students in public tertiary institutions, regardless of their origin”.

“As part of my commitment to youth development, I have also appointed four former student union leaders as senior special assistants,” he added.

“Constructive engagement with students to get feedback and suggestions to enhance infrastructure in public institutions and create a conducive environment for learning and growth is very important.
