Since he became senate president on June 9, neither Bukola Saraki nor the senate has known peace. His party, APC, felt betrayed by his decision to go against the preferred choice of Ahmad Lawan. This was further worsened by the emergence of Ike Ekweremadu of the PDP as his deputy.
It all looked like Saraki’s days were numbered, starting with the probe of his wife, Toyin, by the EFCC, and the cold shoulder he has been receiving from President Muhammadu Buhari. The alleged forgery of senate rules to elect him as senate president also came on the front burner for a while, but Saraki appeared to be unshakable. But it is no longer looking pretty for him.
The Conduct of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has charged him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over allegations of false declaration of assets. The possible sanction include forfeiture of assets and a 10-year ban from holding public office. Most importantly, he could be asked to vacate the senate as part of the sanctions.
Saraki, however, failed to appear before the tribunal on Friday on the basis of a motion he filed before an Abuja high court, while the tribunal has ordered his arrest for not obeying the summons. The senate president has alleged political persecution without mentioning names, but this is believed to refer to the president. But many are also saying he should go and defend himself and not hide before any excuse.
