Security has been beefed up around the presidential villa in Abuja over the protest staged by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), better known as Shi’ites.

The sect members and security operatives have clashed in the nation’s capital on several occasions in the last 72 hours.

Some members of the sect have been killed, while many sustained injuries.

The protesters have been demanding the release of Ibraheem el-Zakzaky, their leader, who was arrested in December 2015, following a clash between soldiers and his followers.

Armed policemen are manning strategic positions around the Fire Service, entrance to Aso Rock. Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and soldiers are also on ground. Vehicles going into the presidential villa are being screened thoroughly before going in.

Armed mobile police officers are mounting surveillance at the federal secretariat, entrance of the state house and the national assembly.

Last week, the army deployed troops in the three-arms zone where the National Assembly Complex, presidential villa as well as law courts are.
