Senate in rowdy session over Amaechi

Senate in rowdy session over Amaechi

The senate broke out into a rowdy session on Wednesday after George Sekibo, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator from Rivers east, presented a petition against Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers state.
Amaechi is one of the ministerial nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the petition submitted on behalf of the three senators from the state, Sekibo accused Amaechi of fraud and corruption.

As he rose to present the petition, some senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) shouted him down, chorousing “no, no, no”, “dead on arrival.”

A shouting match then ensued between PDP and APC senators at the chamber and it took the intervention of Olusola‎ Adeyeye (chief whip) to quell the melee.

On Tuesday, TheCable reported that senators opposed to the inclusion ‎of Amaechi’s name in the ministerial list might stage a protest.

‎Amaechi’s case is akin to that of Musiliu Obanikoro whose nomination as minister was opposed by senators from his state, Lagos.

‎But on the day of his screening, former Senate President David Mark asked him to simply take a “bow and go” amid protests from APC senators.

What goes round comes round… it may be payback time for PDP very soon, re Rotimi Amechi’s confirmation. With this “Amechi’s case”, Bukola Saraki is between the rock and a hard place. Can he afford to ruffle the feathers of PDP senators? Remember he has survived thus far because of their support. Can he dare his party (nay PMB) further? Remember the CCT can bar him from holding public office for 10 years? Morale of the story? What is not good is bad, and what is bad should not be done! Whatever a man (or group of men) sow, he (they) shall reap..!
