The senate has invited Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), and Benneth Igwe, commissioner of police for the territory, over the rising insecurity in the nation’s capital.

The resolution of the upper legislative chamber followed a motion sponsored by Ned Nwoko, senator representing Delta north, on Wednesday.

Nwoko had spoken about the killing of Chris Agidy, his senior legislative aide (SLA), last year.

The police said they have arrested the killer of the late Agidy.

In adopting prayers of the motion, the senate urged Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), to increase patrols and surveillance within the FCT.

Speaking after the motion was adopted, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the incidents of insecurity in the nation’s capital are worrisome.

“The FCT minister and police commissioner would appear before us in closed session on a date to be sent to them by the clerk of the senate,” Akpabio said

“Their expected appearance before the senate is to hear from them, the measures and strategies being put in place to stem the ugly tide of kidnappings in FCT.

“Incidents like kidnapping and killing of SLA of Senator Nwoko and some residents of FCT, are worrisome and must be stopped not only in FCT but in Nigeria generally.”

The senate also urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that there is a dedicated emergency number for police, ambulance and fire services.
