The senate has unveiled a comprehensive reform plan to reposition agricultural colleges across the country in line with global best practices and climate-smart innovations.
The agenda was announced at a stakeholder session organised by the senate committee on agricultural colleges and institutions, chaired by Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, senator representing Oyo south.
Speaking at the event held at the national assembly in Abuja, Alli said agricultural education is key to Nigeria’s food security, youth empowerment, and economic diversification.
He said the committee would push legislative reforms, advocate for increased funding, and pursue international collaborations to drive transformation in the sector.

A major highlight of the session was the announcement that the senate will lead a delegation of agricultural educators and institutions to the COP30 climate conference in Brazil.
Promise Amahah, technical consultant to the committee, described the move as a historic step towards promoting green colleges and showcasing Nigeria’s agricultural innovations on the global stage.
“The senate is not just legislating; it is leading global advocacy,” Amahah said.

“At COP30, Nigeria will present innovations from its agricultural institutions and build alliances to attract investment and knowledge transfer.”
Alli also disclosed plans to host the first legislative summit and expo on agricultural colleges and institutions in October.
He said the event would be followed by a global benchmarking tour in early 2026 to study best practices in Brazil and the European Union.
He urged stakeholders to stay committed to the transformation drive, adding that the committee remained open to partnerships and international exchange.
