Henry Seriake, chairman of the senate committee on ecology and climate change, says Nigeria’s response to extreme weather patterns will improve once the committee “swings into action”.

Seriake said this while receiving an environmental leadership award from Action Aid, in Abuja on Thursday.

He promised to use his new position as chairman to advance the cause of the environment, as well as support communities devastated by the impacts of climate change.

“I will work with all NGOs in Nigeria, support the efforts of all institutions and bodies, to advance the cause of the environment, particularly to join the campaign against climate change,” he said.

Celestine Okwudili, Action Aid representative, said the award conferred on the senator was in recognition of his contribution towards sustaining a healthy environment during his stint as governor of Bayelsa state.

On August 7, Godswill Akpabio, the senate president, unveiled the chairmen of the 74 standing committees of the 10th assembly.

During the process, Seriake was announced as chairman for the house committee on ecology and climate change.
