Senegal President Macky Sall is undergoing self-isolation for a period of two weeks after meeting with a COVID-19 patient.

Seydou Gueye, the president’s spokesman, announced this in a statement, on Thursday.

He said though the president of the West African country has tested negative for the disease, the decision to self-isolate was based on medical recommendations.

“His Excellency President Macky Sall, having been in contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19, underwent a negative income test,” the statement read.

“However, following medical recommendations on the matter, President Sall quarantined himself for a period of two weeks from Wednesday June 24, 2020.”

Senegal has recorded over 6,000 COVID-19 cases with 93 deaths.

Of the total recorded cases in the country, more than 4,000 patients have recovered.

The disease which originated in Wuhan, China, has spread across several countries with some top political leaders infected.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was earlier hospitalised after testing positive for the disease, but he has now recovered.

Globally, over 9.5 million cases have been recorded with more than 480,000 deaths.

But more than half of the COVID-19 patients worldwide have recovered from the infection.
