Seven of the 24 members of the Zamfara state house of assembly have suspended 16 members who allegedly tried to impeach Bilyaminu Moriki, the assembly’s speaker.

On Friday, 18 members of parliament announced the decision to suspend Moriki over his prolonged absence from the state, amid the resurgence of banditry.

The suspension followed a motion by Nasiru Abdullahi, a member representing Maru constituency.

The members also appointed Bashar Gummi as the pro-tempo speaker.

Zamfara has been battling kidnappings and bandit attacks on villages.

According to Channels Television, during plenary on Monday, the house under the leadership of Moriki, described the plenary of the eighteen members as illegal.

They called on residents of the state to disregard news making the rounds that the speaker had been suspended.

The lawmakers alleged that some top politicians outside the state sponsored their colleagues to disrupt the government of Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara.

They also accused the legislators of vandalism at the assembly complex.
