Blessing Okagbare took advantage of Olympic and World champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s absence to capture the 200 metres in Shanghai, China, on Sunday.
Okagbare, who secured long jump silver and 200m bronze at the 2013 IAAF World Championships during an outstanding season, finished in a meet record 22.36 seconds ahead of Anthonique Strachan of The Bahamas in 22.50.
Jamaican contender, Veronica Campbell-Brown (23.08), only managed fifth, with compatriot Anneisha McLaughlin (23.33) placing a distant sixth.
Reasons for Fraser-Pryce’s absence from the race, expected to be three-way clash with Campbell-Brown and Okagbare, were unconfirmed early Sunday morning.
Okagbare had earlier won the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.86 meters on her first attempt, setting a new meeting record.
