Shasha crisis: IGP deploys intervention forces to Oyo

Mohammed Adamu, the inspector-general of police (IGP), has ordered the immediate deployment of intervention and stabilisation forces to Oyo state.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Frank Mba, force public relations officer.

On Thursday, violence erupted in Shasha market, Ibadan, Oyo state, as a result of an ethnic clash.

One person was confirmed dead, while several properties were destroyed, leading to the closure of the market on Saturday.

According to the statement, the deployed officers are to reclaim the public space, reinforce security and bolster public confidence in areas affected by the recent crisis.

“The deployments, consisting largely of intelligence and operational assets of the Force, include four (4) Units of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), seasoned operatives from the Force Intelligence Bureau, and one (1) operational/surveillance Police helicopter from the Police Air-wing,” the statement reads.

“The Intervention Force is charged with the responsibility of reinforcing and stabilising security in the State, preventing further breakdown of law and order, protecting lives and properties and ultimately enhancing public safety and general security in the State.

“The Intervention Force is being coordinated by a Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG David Folawiyo, mni, who is expected to mobilise all relevant stakeholders towards achieving the mandate of the squad.”

The IGP also called on the residents of Oyo and other Nigerians, to cooperate with the police in their efforts to ensure peace.
