Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central, says he became friends after Ibrahim Coomassie, a former inspector-general of police (IGP), ordered his arrest in 1995.

The ex-IGP served during the regime of late Sani Abacha, former military dictator.

He died at a hospital in Katsina state on Thursday. He has since been buried according to Muslim rites.

In a Facebook on Friday, Sani described the late Coomassie as patriot and an elder statesman who was passionate about the country.

“Dr Ibrahim Coomasie ordered my arrest and signed my detention order in Kirikiri prison, Lagos in 1995. When I was released from prison, he reached out to me and we became ‘friends’ and I related with him as a father,” the senator said.

“I visited him at home a couple of times and visited him while on his sick bed few weeks ago.

“We lost a patriot, an elder statesman,a through bred professional and a man ever passionate about his country and his people. May his soul rest in Aljanna Firdausi. Amin.”
