Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central, has responded to the popularity test thrown at him by Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state.

El-Rufai had challenged Sani to a popularity contest, saying angry traders would lynch the lawmaker if he visits the Kaduna central market.

The governor said this while addressing reporters in Abuja on Monday.

He had said: “Shehu Sani cannot even campaign in the market. I challenge him, let us go to Kaduna Central Market and let’s see who will come out unscathed.”

However, on Tuesday, Sani visited the market without any security guard. He urged the governor to do the same.

Accompanied by his aides, Sani went round parts of the market as he was being hailed and cheered by the traders.

The governor and Sani have been at loggerheads since 2015.

Their animosity worsened after the national working committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) granted automatic ticket to Sani and screened out Uba Sani, el-Rufai’s preferred candidate for the senatorial seat.
