Burnt carcass of the diesel-laden tanker that exploded at Alake Sports Complex in Abeokuta
Stalls and shops were destroyed after a diesel-laden tanker exploded at the Alake Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun.
The affected tanker was delivering diesel to one of the generators at the sports complex when it caught fire on Tuesday.
The Alake Sports Complex is the venue for indoor games at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun.
In a statement, Kayode Akinmade, media aide to Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, said the state’s fire services were quick to contain the fire, and no casualties were recorded.

However, pictures from the incident’s aftermath showed stalls and kiosks burnt in the fire outbreak.
“We thank God that the fire was immediately put out to avert any casualties,” the statement reads.
“To this end, we want to assure all our athletes and the people of the state of safety and that there is no cause for alarm as the situation is under absolute control”.
The Gameway Games will be held from May 16 to 30. Over 10,000 athletes are expected to compete in 30 sports.
