Shops destroyed as fire razes third Kano market in two weeks

An inferno has razed some shops and the upper building of the old Savannah Bank at Singer market, Kano.

Saminu Abdullahi, Kano State Fire Service public relations officer, said the fire started at about 2:18 am on Monday. 

Abdullahi said the fire service sent its men to the scene upon receipt of a distress call from the people of the area. 

“We received a distress call at midnight at about 02:18a.m from one Sai’du Hamza that there was a fire outbreak at the market which is in Fagge Local Government Area of the state,” Abdullahi said.

“On receiving the information, we quickly sent some of our personnel and fire fighting vehicles to the scene of the incident at about 02:22 a.m to put off the fire so as not to affect other shops.”

Abdullahi said the service was yet to ascertain the cause and the total number of shops affected.

On March 1, about 80 shops and properties worth millions of naira were burnt at the popular Kurmi market in the state.

Seven days later, 19 shops and a mosque at Rimi market in Kano Municipal LGA were also razed by fire.
