A fire incident has been recorded in Sokoto central market.

Over 180 shops and several motorcycles were said to have been razed in the inferno.

The fire reportedly started from a refuse site inside the market in the early hours of Monday.

Shehu Mohammad, chairman of the motorcycle marketers association, said many traders lost their stalls and goods in the inferno.

“We are yet to ascertain and quantify the number of motorcycles burnt by the fire, as it is burning and raging,” he said.

“But many people lost their shops along with their motorcycles because they could not come in time as the fire started around 6am this morning.”

The federal and state fire services are reportedly at the scene of the incident to put out the fire.

Mohammad appealed to the state government to assist the traders who lost their property to the fire.

In 2021, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in a fire incident that occured at the same market.

On March 12, many shops and vehicles were razed in some sections of Wuse market in Abuja.
