Manchester City scored twice in the first half to defeat Newcastle United 2-0 in their English FA Cup quarter-final encounter at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Bernardo Silva scored both goals in an encounter Man City had over 70% possession and limited Newcastle United to just one shot on target.

Silva, unmarked inside the penalty area, put City ahead on 13 minutes when his shot took a deflection off Dan Burn before finding the back of the net.

The Portuguese midfielder doubled the advantage on 31 minutes in a similar fashion; with his shot deflecting off Sven Botman’s head into the net to seal the win for City.

Aleksander Isak’s shot towards the end of the half drew a smart save from Stefan Ortega in Man City’s goal, and it was all the visitors offered in a disappointing display.

The victory is revenge against the Magpies who dumped City out of the Carabao Cup in September. Pep Guardiola’s Man City also advanced into the semi-final of the competition for a seventh consecutive season.

Earlier in the day, Coventry City, the English championship club, scored twice in added time to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers of the English Premier League 3-2, to reach the FA Cup semi-final for the first time since 1986 when they last won the Cup.
