Gbenga Daniel, former governor of Ogun state
Gbenga Daniel, senator representing Ogun east, has praised the conviction of Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court.
Daniel, who is president of the Nigerian-Finnish association, described the verdict on the pro-Biafra agitator as a decisive victory for international justice.
He commended the Finnish government and the Päijät-Häme district court for “a resolute and judicious” sentencing.
Ekpa was handed a six-year jail term for terrorism-related offences.

The court found him guilty of participating in a terrorist organisation and inciting violence through the enforcement of sit-at-home orders in south-east Nigeria.
Daniel said the verdict is a “watershed moment” that sends a powerful message that “the tentacles of terrorism will be severed by the collective will of civilised nations”.
He said the ruling goes beyond diplomacy, describing it as “tangible, impactful cooperation” that will shape Nigeria-Finland relations.

According to him, the decision represents a “cornerstone of our mutual trust” and a foundation for greater collaboration in justice and security.
Daniel added that the conviction also solidifies Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“This ruling sends an unequivocal message to those threatening our territorial integrity from abroad,” he said.
He insisted that Nigeria’s unity is “non-negotiable”, while praising the court for condemning terrorism as a method, not a cause.

Daniel also expressed gratitude to the Finnish authorities for their commitment to due process.
The legislator said the judgment provides “solace to the victims of violence in Nigeria” and strengthens international law.
