Sit-at-home order: Bus carrying foodstuff set ablaze in Enugu

Hoodlums have set ablaze a bus conveying tomatoes, vegetables and other foodstuff in Enugu east LGA of Enugu state.

According to the Punch, the vehicle, which was coming from Ugwogo end of the Opi/Enugu bypass was said to have been blocked and set ablaze by people enforcing sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) about 5:45am on Monday.

IPOB on July 30 ordered a sit-at-home in the south-east every Monday until Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, is released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The proscribed group said the lockdown tagged ‘Ghost Monday’ will also affect schools and marketplaces.

It threatened to shut down economic activities in the region, adding that violators of the order will be visited with violence.

Despite the directives of some south-east governors for residents to ignore the order and the suspension of the order by IPOB, many residents still choose to stay at home owing to fears of being attacked.

Efforts to reach Daniel Ndukwe, Enugu police spokesperson, proved abortive as he did not respond to his calls.

In a similar incident in August, gunmen set ablaze three buses belonging to a transportation company in Nkwogwu, Aboh Mbaise LGA of Imo state.

In a more recent incident, hoodlums set ablaze a truck which was conveying spare parts from Nnewi in Anambra to Kabba in Kogi, at Eluagu, Obupka, in Nsukka LGA.

It is, however, not confirmed if these incidents are linked to the sit-at-home order.
