The entertainment industry is incomplete without a regular dose of controversy. It is expected that celebrities will get caught up in one or more controversies because of the lack of privacy that comes with their status.

In the past year, the Nigerian music industry has experienced controversies because of the percieved carelessness of musicians, and situations beyond their control. Although most celebrities try to stay away from controversies, some cannot stay away from them.

Because of how loud these controversies were in the past year, we will take a walk down memory lane and bring you the most controversial Nigerian musicians of the past year.

Naira Marley

Who else is more suitable to start this list than the Marian president, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley.

Naira Marley is the most controversial Nigerian musician. He is a talented artiste whose career is made of back-to-back hit songs and controversies.

He makes the headlines because of the lyrics of his songs, his huge fanbase, and most especially his issue with the “Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”

His song “Am I a yahoo boy” got him in so much trouble with the EFCC. He traveled and hosted a show despite the government’s order. He disregarded the government’s order when he attended a party where he and actress Funke Akindele and others were arrested. Naira Marley is proudly a controversial Nigerian musician.

Lil Frosh

Lil Frosh is another Nigerian musician who dealt with controversy last year. This controversy shook his budding career, and no one knows if he will come back from this.

He beat up his ex-girlfriend “Gift”.  Gift shared the evidence of the domestic abuse she passed through in the hands of Lil Frosh,  and this caught fire on social media and led to him being dropped by the management of Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). He pleaded on social media after he was dragged, Only for him to turn around and deny the claims.

D’Banj

D’Banj is one of the Nigerian musicians who seemed to enjoyed a controversial-free career until the year 2020 when his reputation stood the test of time.

He was accused of rape by a young lady named Seyitan. Seyitan claimed that D’Banj raped her in 2018 after forcing his way into her hotel room after she had rejected his advances severally.

Seyitan decided to call him out on social media after he made a post again on social media. The drama that followed this did a lot of damage to D’banj’s career and endorsements.

Burna

Burna Boy, also known as the African Giant, is a walking talking controversial artiste.  You cannot talk about controversies in the Nigerian music industry without mentioning him. He is controversial as he is successful.

Burna Boy has been referred to as arrogant because of his stance on different issues and how he carries himself. Right from his early days in the industry, he has always gotten into one controversy or another. From his feud with South Africa rapper AKA, to his current feud with Davido.

Social media went crazy after he claimed he was the greatest after the Afrobeat founder and icon Fela Kuti and that no one paved the way for him.

Davido has experienced his fair share of controversies. He is outspoken, so what he says most times are taken out of context and misunderstood. He has dealt with a lot of controversies in his successful career, but the most recent was his beef with the African Giant “Burna Boy” which led to him singing what later became the 2020 EndSARS protest anthem, “FEM”.
