South Africa’s U-17 women demolish Seychelles by record 28-0

South Africa’s U-17 national women team became the first side to win an international match in African football by a staggering margin after beating Seychelles 28-0 in their opening game at the inaugural Cosafa Championship in Mauritius.

The win, which was recorded on Saturday during their Group B match, came two months after the country’s senior women team mauled Comoros 17-0 in the Cosafa Women’s tournament in Port Elizabeth.

The goals were shared between 11 different players, with Oyisa Marhazi and Tiffany Kortjie, two of the Bantwana forwards, grabbing double hat-tricks at the Francois Xavier Stadium.

Marhazi started the assault inside the opening minute of the encounter before captain Jessica Wade got an hattrick to make it 4-0 in the 17th minute.

Before the end of the first 45 minutes, South Africa was already leading by 15-0 with Tiyana Carollissen, Sonika Mzingeli, Nabeelah Galant and Nelly Gamede among those on the score-sheet.

The second half saw Galant put three goals past Seychelles goalkeeper before Kortjie took her tally to six. Mzingeli, Philisani Hlela, Yolanda Nduli and Shakira O’Malley netted once each in the big win.

Seychelles were participating in the under-17 level of the southern African championship for the first time. They face Botswana in their second Group B match on September 23.

The biggest margin in any international match is the 31-0 win for Australia over American Samoa in the 2001 World Cup qualification.
