South-west leaders push for power devolution, inclusive growth at Akure dialogue

South-west governors, traditional rulers, ministers, and regional leaders convened in Akure, Ondo state, on Wednesday to advocate for power devolution, true federalism, and enhanced cooperation among states in the region.

Lucky Aiyedatiwa, governor of Ondo, hosted the southwest leaders’ dialogue at the International Culture and Events Centre (The Dome).

Aiyedatiwa said there is a need to move beyond centralisation, calling for institutional reforms and open dialogue between federal and state governments.

He praised President Bola Tinubu’s reforms for stabilising the economy, improving state allocations, and restoring fiscal discipline.

Highlighting federal projects in the south-west, Aiyedatiwa mentioned the rural access and agricultural marketing project (RAAMP), Lagos–Calabar coastal highway, Ilaje deep seaport, and the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, among others.

The governor described the collaborations as signs of a maturing democracy and growing citizen ownership in governance.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, called for a unified regional agenda to promote inclusive growth and democracy.

“Today is the time for us to reclaim our heritage of innovation, education and good governance. The Southwest can and will lead Nigeria’s rebirth,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He also lauded the reforms by the president for stabilising the naira and attracting investments, urging the south-west to reclaim its legacy of innovation and good governance.

Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, represented by Noimot Salako-Oyedele, his deputy, said democracy thrives on dialogue and collaboration, pledging continued commitment to economic resilience and regional unity.

Bisi Akande, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said Nigeria is at a turning point.

Reuben Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-cultural and political group, urged the governors to prioritise collaboration over politics, sharing successful governance models across states.

“To our governors, your people elected you to improve their lives. When Osun innovates successfully, let Oyo adopt and adapt,” Fasoranti said.

“When Lagos leads, let others follow. When Ondo comes up with solutions, let others adopt them.”

The event was attended by governors, ministers and state officials, including Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, represented by Kola Adewusi, his deputy; Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, represented by Bayo Lawal, his deputy; and Abiodun Oyebanji, governor of Ekiti, represented by Omolara Adubiaro, the secretary to the state government (SSG).
