Omoyele Sowore
Omoyele Sowore, an activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has accused officers of Nigeria Police Force (NPF) of breaking his arm while in detention.
On Wednesday, Sowore arrived at the NPF headquarters in Abuja to honour an invitation from the inspector-general of police monitoring unit, over a petition.
The activist was accompanied to the force headquarters by his lawyers and some activists, with members of the ‘Take It Back Movement’ also in tow.
The activist was not released on Wednesday as he spent the night in police custody.

In the letter dated August 1 and addressed to Sowore, the police said the activist’s name “featured prominently” in a case bordering on “forgery and inciting disturbance”.
In a post published on Sowore’s X handle on Thursday, the activist said some police officers “forcibly gained entry” into Sowore’s cell on Thursday morning to take him to court.
“This morning at 6 AM, a police team led by a chief superintendent of police from the IGP monitoring unit forcibly gained entry into Omoyele Sowore’s cell at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja claiming they were taking him to court,” the post reads.

“The team of nine officers, including eight heavily armed personnel, handled Sowore roughly when he asked to see the charges and notify his lawyers, breaking his arm in the process, before taking him to another police facility.”
Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, is yet to respond to enquiry on the incident. Several calls and messages to his mobile phone went unanswered at the time of this report.
