John Dadi-Mamud, director/chief executive officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), says the institute’s policy of producing world class coaches and administrators informed its resolve to seek motivational students for its programmes.

The NIS boss, who stated this at the 2020/2021 matriculation for the country’s foremost sports training institution at the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos, over the weekend, also said the NIS had drawn its programmes towards meeting modern standards across the world.

“I wish to say to you that the transformation of this institute is a deliberate effort at turning you out as graduates that would turn around Nigerian sports profitably and to the envy of the world,” he told the matriculating students.

“Your ultimate performance will be evaluated on your contributions to our country’s podium success at major sporting competitions.”

Dadi-Mamud also asked the fresh students to adhere strictly to COVID-19 protocols as spelt out by the presidential task force (PTF) and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

“We have put the necessary health facility in place to meet all your needs in this regard,” he said.

The NIS, established in 1972 by the Yakubu Gowon military administration and dedicated to higher performance in sports, has produced more than 1,500 graduates over the years, a good number of who have served in the ECOWAS region and other parts of Africa.
