A review of the 2025 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) has increased the credit pass rate to 62.96 per cent from 38.32 per cent.

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), while earlier announcing the release of results for its 2025 SSCE, had reported a sharp decline in 2025 performance compared to 2024.

Out of 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the exam across 23,554 schools, it was said that only 754,545 candidates, representing 38.32 per cent, obtained a minimum of five credits covering their core subjects (including English and mathematics).

The exam body, following public outrage over the mass failure, later admitted that it had discovered technical issues that compromised the scoring of results.

Reviewing the released results, it said the grading of “serialised papers”, a feature it described as a recent innovation, was affected.

WAEC said a serialised code file was wrongly used in the printing of English Language Objective Tests (Paper 3), which resulted in them being scored with the wrong keys.

The council said schools that sat the WASSCE for school candidates, 2025, using the computer-based mode, were not affected by this error.

“The observable decline in the performance of candidates earlier announced was partly traceable to this absurd situation,” WAEC said.

“The council sincerely apologises for this imbroglio and deeply regrets the emotional and mental dismay it might have caused the affected candidates and all stakeholders.”

WAEC said the latest analysis shows that 1,239,884 candidates, representing 62.96 per cent, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
