State police can resolve Nigeria’s insecurity in six months, says Gani Adams

Gani Adams

Gani Adams, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, says Nigeria’s security challenge could be overcome within six months if the federal government approves the establishment of state police.

Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ on Monday, Adams said the six geopolitical zones in the country now broadly support the idea of state policing.

“For the first time, the six geopolitical zones in the country agree to state police. Even our northern brothers, the northern governors and the emirs also agree on state police,” he said.

“And I believe that if the national assembly legislates on state police and the president signs it into law, the issue of insecurity in this country will be resolved within a period of six months.”

He added that while Amotekun has been working in south-west states, the regional security outfit lacks the sophisticated weaponry to combat terrorists effectively.

Addressing concerns from critics that state police could be abused for political gain, Adams urged that protecting lives should take precedence.

He voiced support for the southern governors who have said that state police is a non-negotiable aspect of their broader push for true federalism and grassroots security.

“I completely agree with the southern governors that we urgently need state police. State police is a key element of true federalism,” he said.

“At the same time, I commend the south-west governors, who had already taken a position on this matter even before the southern governors.

“Given the current situation in the country, anyone who cares about Nigeria cannot disagree on the need for state police.”
