Okoi Obono-Obla, special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on prosecution, has asked Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, to stop intimidating him.

Ekweremadu had accused the presidential aide of masterminding a smear campaign against him.

The lawmaker said he was linked with some assets abroad after his will was stolen from the probate registry in Enugu.

He accused Innocent Uzemulike, former chief judge of Enugu, of conniving with some politicians to steal and doctor the will, while Obono-Obla has allegedly been spreading false reports about him.

“There has been a sustained smear campaign against my person by Mr Okoi Obono-Obla. I would have continued to ignore them, but for the concern of my well-wishers,” Ekweremadu had said in a statement.

But reacting when TheCable contacted him over the comment, Obono-Obla asked EKweremadu if he had evidence to substantiate the allegation.

“Can he substantiate that allegation? Can he prove it? He should leave me alone. Ekweremadu should know that I am doing my work. He should separate my person from my work. I am not from Enugu state. I am from Cross River,” he said.

“I am doing my work as a public officer, I don’t have anything against him as a person.”

Obono-Obla also accused the deputy senate president of sponsoring a group to attack him.

“He sponsored a group to attack me. They launched their attack two weeks ago, calling on Mr President to sack me. I don’t know where that is coming from. I’m not after him; I’m not his political opponent. I’m just a public officer doing my work. So, he should stop attacking me; he should stop personalising issues… I can’t be intimidated in doing the job the federal government has given to me.

“I challenge him to substantiate these allegations.”
