Super Falcons end summer series with defeat to US

The Super Falcons of Nigeria were beaten by the United States women’s national soccer team 2-0 in the last game of the summer invitational series on Thursday.

Christen Press opened the scoring for the United States in the second minute of additional time in the first half at the brand-new Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Lynn Williams then doubled the lead for the US team in the 94 minutes to hand them a 6-0 record against the 9-time African champions.

The Falcons also had a couple of chances but were dispelled by the four-time world champions comfortably well.

Randy Waldrum made four changes in the game with Esther Ogbonna, Ifeoma Onumonu, Charity Adule, and Monday Gift replacing Ijeoma Okoronkwo, Francisca Ordega, Glory Ogbonna, and Rita Chikwelu respectively.

The summer series tournament was used as a warmup for the Falcons who commence preparation for the 2022 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) play-off against Ghana.

In the three games played during the tournament, Nigeria secured a draw against Jamaica but lost to both the USA and Jamaica.
