Nigeria took a huge step towards qualifying for the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) with a 1-0 win over Gambia on Wednesday.

Highly-rated midfielder Amarachi Okoronkwo struck the only goal of the keenly contested first leg encounter in Bakau.

Super Falcons head coach, Thomas Dennerby, had promised to name a star-studded line up for the game.

He fulfilled his pre-game assurance by fielding Asisat Oshoala, Desire Oparanozie, Francisca Ordega, Tochukwu Oluehi and Onome Ebi.

Okoronkwo’s brilliantly taken shot from 23 metres made the difference in the battle.

Both teams will again clash in the second leg of the qualifying series at the Agege Stadium, Lagos, on June 11.

The Super Falcons are the defending champions of AWCON.
