Suspected Nyanya bomber extradited to Nigeria
The prime suspect in the two bomb blasts at Nyanya near Abuja, Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, has been extradited from Sudan to Nigeria.
He was brought into the country on Nigerian Airforce aircraft with registration number 5N-FGX, and was subsequently delivered to Nigerian security operatives by Interpol agents at Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport.
Ogwuche, who deserted from the Nigeria army, fled to Sudan when he was wanted by security agents on the grounds of allegedly masterminding the bomb blasts at Nyanya.
The state security service had announced a reward of N25 million for information leading to the arrest of Ogwuche, a native of Benue State.
Ogwuche was first arrested at Abuja airport in 2011 on arrival from Britain on suspected terrorism-related activities, but was released to the care of his father, a retired army colonel, following protests from rights groups.
His extradition was stalled earlier for procedural failure.
A Sudanese newspaper reported last month that a team of Nigerian officials including security agents who travelled to Sudan with the aim of effecting the extradition was turned back by Sudanese officials on the grounds that that they needed the court papers, particularly the charge sheet detailing the offences for which Ogwuche was being prosecuted.
Nyanya has suffered two high-casualty blasts in the last three months.
On April 14, 2014, a blast at the Nyanya motor park killed 70 people.
Another one at a taxi station on May 1, 2014, killed at least 19 people and injured at least 60.
Good progress. As an ex-army intelligence officer he is key to unravelling some of the insecurity puzzles. My fears are the possibility that the vital links which he has could have been compromised by the terrorists-friendly Sudanese authorities.
