South-west govs take unified position on constitution amendment

Governors of the six states in the south-west geopolitical zone on Wednesday met in Ibadan, Oyo state, to discuss moves to amend the 1999 constitution in the common interest of the Yoruba nation.

The governors present in the meeting were Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), while Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun state governor, was represented by Yetunde Onanuga, his deputy.

The governors, at the end of the meeting held at government house, Agodi, resolved to lobby the houses of assembly in the region and other stakeholders to actualise the bid to effect positive changes to the constitution.

Briefing journalists at the end of the meeting, Akeredolu who spoke on behalf of the governors, said they discussed and deliberated on issues of common interest to the region.

“The meeting went well. We discussed issues of common interest. As you can see, all the governors of the zone are brothers,” he said.

“What we are doing is that as one from Oduduwa all of us being brothers, we are finding solution to matters that are of common interest to all of us and we are doing it together.

“Talking about specific issues that we looked at, one of such is that there are many things affecting us as you all know and it is clear to us that there is move for the amendment of the constitution and as expected, we know as leaders of this zone what should be our interest.

“So, we want to present a common position and have our houses of assembly and other stakeholders who believe in us to come along with us on issues that we have agreed on and believe are fundamental and common to our interest.”
