The Afghan Taliban on Tuesday warned Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the extremist Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group, against waging a parallel insurgency in Afghanistan.
Akhtar Mansoor, Taliban deputy leader, said his group would not tolerate any form of interference.
“The jihad in Afghanistan must be conducted under one flag and one leadership,” Mansoor said in a statement posted on his group’s website.
“Attempts to establish separate Jihadi rank or leadership other than the Islamic emirate, the official name for the Taliban movement, will create division and dispute.
“On the basis of religious brotherhood, we ask for your goodwill and we don’t want to see interference in our affairs.”
Both groups have perpetrated atrocities in the regions where they operate.
While ISIS has seized vast areas in northern Syria and Iraq, subjecting innocent people to undue hardship, the Taliban have been waging a battle against government forces in Afghanistan for over a decade.
