Policemen attached to Aminu Tambuwal, speaker of the house of representatives, have been withdrawn, TheCable understands.

TheCable was informed that while Ita Ekpeyong, the director-general of the Department of State Service (DSS), was against the total withdrawal of security, Sulaiman Abba, the acting inspector-general of police, withdrew his men.

Tambuwal’s DSS details and men of the Civil Defence corps are still guarding him.

The speaker announced his defection from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday and attended his new party’s extraordinary convention in Abuja the following day.

A member of the house of reps had told TheCable on Thursday morning: “Early this morning, a few minutes after midnight to be precise, a top-level security officer informed the speaker that orders had been given for the withdrawal of his security details.”

The source, who accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being behind the action, further alleged that a verdict would be entered against Tambuwal by a court in Abuja.

Tambuwal, as speaker, is entitled to high-level security made up of men from the police, Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Service (DSS).

The speaker’s media aide, Imam Imam, did not pick his calls or reply SMS when TheCable tried to seek his response on the development.
