A police sergeant attached to the taskforce for dismantling tanker traffic in the Apapa area of Lagos was on Tuesday crushed to death by a tanker.

Patricia Amadin, spokeswoman for the Lagos state police command, confirmed the incident to NAN on Wednesday.

Amadin, who identified the deceased as Lukas Abashi, disclosed that the driver of the vehicle with Reg. No. ANC 66 XA escaped after the accident.

She said the policeman died at the spot after tanker ran over him.

Amadin said the driver attempted to escape with the vehicle, but for the intervention of other members of the taskforce who used motorcycles to pursue him.

She said the policeman was on official duty at the time of accident, adding that the tanker has the inscription TOTAL.

Amadin said the body had been deposited in the mortuary, while the tanker was taken to a police station in Apapa.
