Taraba governor imposes curfew on Jalingo

Darius Ishaku, governor of Taraba state, has imposed a curfew on Jalingo, the state capital and other areas affected during the outbreak of crisis in the state.

Many residents were displaced after armed men set houses on fire in Janibanibu village, Kona ward of Jalingo local government area of the state on Monday.

The attackers also killed an unspecified number of people.

In a statement, Bala Dan Abu, the governor’s spokesman, said the curfew, which will run from 4pm to 6am, was meant to check the violence.

“In view of the fresh outbreak of crisis in some communities in Kona and ATC near Jalingo, the Taraba government has decided to impose a curfew on Jalingo and all the affected communities with immediate effect,” he said.

“The curfew is from 4:00pm to 6:00 am daily and it remains in force until further notice.”

Ishaku said he had directed security agencies to enforce the curfew strictly in order to restore peace in the affected communities.

In March, the governor had imposed a 24-hour curfew on Jalingo, following crisis which occurred as a result of post-election violence.
