Mohammed Gwampo, deputy speaker of the Taraba state house of assembly, has been impeached.

Gwampo, who is representing Yorro state constituency, was impeached at the plenary session of the house on Monday.

He was reportedly impeached over “lack of competence to discharge his duties”.

The motion for the impeachment of the deputy speaker was moved by Albasu Kunini, the former majority leader of Lau state constituency.

After his impeachment, the house elected Charles Maijankai of Karim Lamido I state constituency as the new deputy speaker.

Until his election as the new deputy speaker, Maijankai was the majority leader of the house.

In September, Tonye Isenah, speaker of the Bayelsa state house of assembly, was removed following his refusal to step down.

The impeached speaker had been under pressure to resign over the emergence of Douye Diri as the governorshipl candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 16 election.

Isenah and Diri are from Kolokuma-Opokuma local government area of the state, a development that some political pundits say could work against the PDP candidate in the election.

Monday Obolo, a PDP member representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 2, was elected to replace Isenah.
