The NCDC had suspended the announcement of new cases on its social media handles between October 20 and October 24, as a result of the #EndSARS crisis in the country.

Although the agency didn’t make any direct reference to the incident, October 20 was the day armed men in military uniform opened fire on #EndSARS protesters who had gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos to campaign against police brutality.

Following the Lekki shooting which received widespread condemnation within and outside Nigeria, violence escalated across the country, leading to burning and looting of public and private properties.

“Dear Nigerians, we recently paused our social media activities as a sign of respect to lives lost and affected following the recent violence in parts of Nigeria,” a message posted on the agency’s Twitter handle on Saturday, read.

NCDC, however, said testing of samples had continued during the period, with daily results posted on its microsite.

Although one new death was recorded on Sunday, between October 20 and 25, five persons were confirmed to have died of coronavirus-related complications, increasing the fatality toll to 1,130.

Meanwhile, the total figure of recoveries has also increased from 56,697 to 57,465 within one week.
