The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says vandalism and severe weather were responsible for the collapse of a transmission tower in Kaduna, which disrupted electricity supply in parts of the state.

In a statement on Saturday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s general manager of public affairs, said tower 7 along the Kaduna tower line I and II in Rigasa community collapsed on Thursday after a downpour and windstorm.

She said upon inspection, the company’s engineers discovered that vandals had carted away some “tower members”, weakening its structure and making it susceptible to collapse.

“The incident primarily affected power supply to parts of Kaduna South, causing interruptions in some communities,” the statement reads.

“To minimise the impact, TCN advised Kaduna Electric to link its 33kV Mogadishu feeder with the 33kV Abakwa feeder to ensure customers in Mogadishu still have access to electricity.”

The company said the affected areas to were Kinkinau, Yan Tukwane, Kabala West, and Unguwan Muazu — noting that Kaduna North was not impacted.

Mbah said the TCN engineers are dismantling the collapsed structure to clear the site and “commence the re-erection of a new tower”.

She apologised to affected customers in southern Kaduna and assured that efforts are being made to reduce the duration of the outage.
