Delta teacher ‘dies’ after flogging by father of student ‘who stole palm wine’

A teacher of Alihame Mixed Secondary School Agbor, Delta state has reportedly died after being flogged by the father of a student.

Bright Edafe, police spokesperson in the state, said the incident occured on Wednesday.

Edafe said the student and some of his school mates allegedly stole two kegs of palm wine from a shop.

He said the matter was reported to the school authority and consequently, the students were flogged.

He said the suspect — Nnajiofor Nweke — came to the school and started flogging teachers in protest to the punishment meted out on his son.

“On 18th October 2023, the suspect Nnajiofor Nweke, a father of one student (name withheld) at Alihame Mixed secondary School Agbor, on the said date, his son alongside some other students went to a palm wine shop and allegedly stole two kegs of palm wine,” the statement reads.

“The matter was reported to the school authorities and the students were flogged.

“The suspect came to the school in protest, with a cane, and started flogging teachers in the school.

“One of the teachers slumped and died.”

Edafe said the suspect has been arrested for a suspected case of murder and is currently being investigated at the state criminal investigation department.
