Tech experts warn non-compliance with data law could erode public trust

Technology experts have warned that non-compliance with data law could erode public trust.

Speaking during a two-day training programme on data privacy, protection, and compliance in Lagos, organised by Ritemate Technologies, a licensed data protection compliance organisation (DPCO), the stakeholders noted the significance of protecting data subjects in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

The training brought together participants from various sectors to explore the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 and key regulatory requirements for data controllers and processors.

The sessions covered topics such as lawful data processing, data subject rights, breach management, third-party risk, and the implications of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data.

In his opening and closing remarks, Jide Ogunleye, CEO of Ritemate Technologies, stressed the need for immediate registration with the NDPC and early preparation for the annual Compliance Audit Returns (CAR).

“What we have achieved with this training is more than just compliance awareness,” Ogunleye said.

“We are equipping organisations with the tools, policies, and governance frameworks they need to thrive responsibly in today’s data-driven world. At Ritemate, our mission is to make compliance practical, sustainable, and value-adding.”

Ogunleye emphasised that data compliance is essential not only to avoid regulatory sanctions but also to foster trust, enhance competitiveness, and protect corporate reputation in a digital-first economy.

Participants described the sessions as “insightful and eye-opening”, saying they left with a clearer understanding of the importance of protecting data subjects and how to implement compliance structures within their organisations.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting organisations across Nigeria and beyond in navigating the complex regulatory landscape, positioning data protection not as a burden but as a strategic advantage.

The company noted that another edition of the training would be announced soon, urging organisations to reach out for tailored support and compliance guidance.
