TheCable, Nigeria’s independent online newspaper, is partnering with GroundTruth, a non-profit organisation based in the United States which supports early-career journalists around the world through its Report for the World initiative (RFW). The objective is to improve news coverage of disadvantaged communities in Nigeria.

Three RFW corps members will be engaged for an initial period of one year, renewable yearly and possibly leading to a permanent contract under a new engagement. The areas of focus are (1) criminal justice system (2) climate change and (3) fact check.

HEAD, FACT CHECK DESK

In September 2019, disinformation and misformation about xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa led to reprisals in Nigeria. South African businesses across major cities in the country were looted and razed, affecting the biggest economies on the continent. Misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines is also posing a great challenge for the eradication of coronavirus in the country. This desk will anticipate and counter such dangerous misinformation in Nigeria and on the continent.

Requirements: Relevant journalism experience, with strong analytical, creative and organisational skills. Candidate must possess proficiency in modern, digital journalism. Experience as a fact checker is a significant advantage. The successful candidate will be based in Lagos or Abuja.

REPORTER, CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

The Nigerian Police Force was ranked the worst police in the world in 2017. In 2020, a revolt against the police led to the EndSARS protests. TheCable’s crime and justice desk has the primary objective of bringing the entire system, including the judiciary, under the necessary scrutiny.

Requirements: Relevant journalism experience, with strong analytical skills. Candidate must possess proficiency in modern, digital journalism. The successful candidate will be based in Lagos or Abuja.

REPORTER, CLIMATE CHANGE

African countries are more vulnerable to climate change than a majority of states around the world. From droughts in Ethiopia to floods in Nigeria, Africans are paying a heavy price for a phenomenon many of them know little or nothing about. TheCable’s climate change reporter will help in educating Nigerians about what must be done to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Requirements: Relevant journalism experience, with strong analytical and creative. Basic understanding of climate change issues is important. The successful candidate will be based in Lagos or Abuja.

Method of application: All applicants should send their CVs and applications to [email protected]. The position applied for should be the subject of the e-mail. Failure to comply will void the application.

Pay package: Our remuneration packages are very competitive.

Deadline: March 8, 2021.
