TheCable, Nigeria’s independent online newspaper, has launched a dedicated website, petrobarometer.thecable.ng, to monitor the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.
The Petroleum Industry Barometer Project (PIBP) is an initiative of the Cable Journalism Newspaper Foundation (CNJF) in partnership with the newspaper.
PIBP focuses on the oil and gas industry through investigative reporting and advocacy on the chain of activities in the sector and its relationship with other sectors.
The project is informed by the belief that the Nigerian oil industry could benefit from more scrutiny through in-depth reporting and discussions around issues of transparency.
Simon Kolawole, founder and CEO of TheCable, said the oil industry in Nigeria is so complicated that not many Nigerians can really understand the issues at play.
“In the media, we regularly report the oil sector without being able to beam proper searchlight on the monstrosity,” he said.
“It is not our fault. The oil industry is naturally complicated, but then multiply that by 100 when you are talking about Nigeria. The oil sector players are generally happy that Nigerians do not know much about the industry beyond what they tell us.
“With Petrobarometer, we intend to inspire a new level of interest in the industry, and hopefully generate more conversations around the facts and figures coming out of the sector.”
CNJF currently runs the Policy Radar Initiative (PRIN) in partnership with TheCable to scrutinise education and power sectors in Nigeria.
PRIN is supported by the MacArthur Foundation.
