TheCable partners Situation Room for reporting elections

TheCable, Nigeria’s independent online newspaper, has partnered with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, (PLAC), conveners of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation, for the coverage of the elections, starting on Saturday.

In a statement on Thursday, Abiose Adams, programme office of Cable Newspaper Journalism Foundation (CNJF), said the partnership is aimed at promoting the goals of free, fair and credible elections in the February 16 and March 2 elections.

The partnership signed on January 22, 2019, would allow TheCable leverage on real time reports of the civil society organisations and observers across the nation while the Situation Room, non-partisan platform, will also leverage on TheCable’s resources, including wide social media coverage, to reach Nigerians.

TheCable has deployed reporters across all the geopolitical zones and key states in the election.

“One of the terms of collaboration include the training of investigative journalists on media code of election reporting, fact-checking, election security and reporting of disadvantaged groups,” the statement read.

“To this end, the Situation Room trained reporters and freelancers, of TheCable, from the six geopolitical regions of the country last week.”

Clement Nwankwo, the executive director of PLAC, said one of the terms of the partnership which is to encourage journalists to focus on accurate reporting of the elections and events around elections.

“Effective reporting through fact-checking of claims, impartiality, defense of public interest, and inclusion of disadvantaged groups, is vital to the entrenchment of the democratic process,” he said.
