‘They were in the trenches together’ — Kaduna SSG lauds Tinubu for Uba Sani’s CON

L-R: Uba Sani and Bola Tinubu

AbdulKadir Meyere, secretary to the Kaduna state government (SSG), has praised President Bola Tinubu for recognising the contributions of pro-democracy activists with national honours.

President Tinubu on Thursday, while addressing a joint sitting of the national assembly conferred national honours on 66 Nigerians who played defining roles in the country’s struggle for democracy.

Among the honourees is Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, who was conferred Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Others on the list include Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Humphrey Nwosu, and Kudirat Abiola, posthumously recognised for their critical roles in the June 12 struggle and broader democratic movements.

In a statement issued on Friday, Meyere described the honour as “a fitting recognition of a patriot who put his life on the line for democracy”.

He noted that both Sani and Tinubu “were in the trenches together” during the struggle against military dictatorship, fighting for the democratic freedoms Nigerians now enjoy.

“Many of today’s political actors were in their comfort zones when these sacrifices were being made,” Meyere said.

He also commended the resilience of Nigerians whose demand for democratic governance provided a foundation for civil rights activists, journalists, and human rights lawyers to push against the military dictatorship.

The SSG said beyond Sani’s activism, the governor is committed to the interests of the common man, citing his tenure in the senate “where he championed pro-poor legislation and his current people-focused governance in Kaduna state”.

“This national honour is the icing on the cake of a series of awards and recognitions our people’s governor has received since assuming office two years ago,” he said.

Meyere expressed confidence that the CON honour would further encourage Sani to deliver on his mandate and contribute meaningfully to the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
